What is a travel eSIM?

A digital SIM you buy online and install by scanning a QR code or through the provider’s app. It gives you mobile data abroad without taking out your physical SIM.

Your phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked. Most iPhones from the XS onwards, recent Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy S phones do. Here is how to check.

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not to the line that carries the data. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, turn its data roaming off, and set the eSIM as your data line.

Install it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you travel. Many plans only start counting days when they connect at your destination, but some start at installation, so check the provider’s terms.

Maps, messages and browsing use a few hundred MB a day. Video and hotspot use much more. Our data usage calculator estimates it for your trip.

Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily amount at full speed. Our finder shows it on every unlimited plan, for example 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps, or no daily limit stated.
