Mobile networks in Vietnam: Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone

Travel eSIMs for Vietnam connect to Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone or Vietnamobile. Vinaphone is the mobile service of the state group VNPT, which is why Airalo lists its network as VNPT.

ProviderLocal networks it uses
AiraloVNPT 5G

HolaflyNot stated by the provider
Jetpac GlobalViettel Vietnam, Mobifone
Nomad eSIMVinaphone 4G, Vietnamobile 3G, MobiFone 4G
Orange TravelGTEL, Mobifone, Vietnamobile, VNPT, Viettel
RoamlessMobifone
SailyNot stated by the provider
Voye GlobalViettel Vietnam, Vinaphone

As listed on each provider’s plan pages, shown by network brand name. Networks can change, so check before you buy.

  • Viettel: Jetpac Global (with MobiFone) and Voye Global (with Vinaphone).
  • Vinaphone: Airalo (listed as VNPT 5G), Voye Global, and some Nomad eSIM plans (4G).
  • MobiFone: aloSIM, Jetpac Global, and other Nomad eSIM plans (with Vietnamobile 3G).

Tip: heading into the mountains or along the coast between cities? Jetpac Global and Voye Global each name two networks, one of them Viettel, so your phone has a second signal to fall back on. Holafly and Saily don’t name their Vietnam network.

Unlimited eSIM for Vietnam: full-speed data limits

Every provider we compare sells an unlimited Vietnam plan, but most give you a set amount of full-speed data each day and then slow you down until the next day.

ProviderFull speed per dayAfter that
Airalo3 GB1 Mbps
aloSIMNo daily limit stated by the providerNot stated by the provider
HolaflyNo daily limit stated by the providerNot stated by the provider
Jetpac Global3 GB every 24 hoursUp to 1 Mbps
Nomad eSIM2 GB512 kbps
Saily5 GBUp to 1 Mbps
Voye Global3 GB or 5 GB, depending on the planSlowed down; speed not stated by the provider

At 1 Mbps, messages and maps still work but video calls struggle; at 512 kbps, photo uploads crawl too. If you stream, video-call or share your connection most days, pick a plan with a higher daily amount, such as Saily or the larger Voye Global plans, rather than the cheapest “unlimited” label.

How much data do you need in Vietnam?

Ride-hailing, maps and translation apps run on mobile data all day, so even a light user should not count on cafe Wi-Fi. If a fixed plan looks close to your daily use, compare it with an unlimited plan’s daily limit above.

How do you use your phone?

Estimates for 10 days with Wi-Fi where you stay, worked out with the same method as our data usage calculator. Pick the card closest to you to adjust it to your own apps.

Calls, SMS and WhatsApp

Airalo, Holafly, Nomad eSIM and Saily sell their Vietnam plans as data only, with no Vietnamese phone number. Make calls through apps such as WhatsApp, Zalo or FaceTime over your eSIM data.

To keep receiving texts and bank codes on your usual number, leave your home SIM switched on for calls and SMS, and turn off its Data Roaming so all data goes through the eSIM.

Using a Vietnam eSIM as a hotspot

Holafly is the only provider we compare that states a hotspot rule for Vietnam: you can share up to 1 GB a day with other devices, even on its unlimited plans.

If you’ll tether a laptop for remote work every day, that cap is the number to plan around; a plan with a large fixed allowance gives you more room.

Travelling on from Vietnam?

Many trips combine Vietnam with Cambodia, Laos or Thailand. A Southeast Asia plan covers several of these on one eSIM, so you don’t install a new one at each border; compare them in the Southeast Asia eSIM finder.

Setting up your eSIM

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, using the eSIM device checker.
  2. Buy and install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi you trust, so you are online the moment you land.
  3. When you land, open Settings, choose the eSIM as your Mobile Data line and turn on Data Roaming for it.
  4. Turn off Data Roaming on your home SIM so it can’t use data abroad.

Step-by-step screens are in our guides to installing an eSIM on iPhone and installing an eSIM on Android.
