Quick answer
Most travel eSIM problems come from a setting, not a broken eSIM. Check that the travel eSIM is switched on and chosen for mobile data, that roaming is on for it if your provider asks, then turn airplane mode on and off. If that doesn’t work, follow the fixes below in order.
Fixes to try, in order
- Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. On Android: the SIM settings, under mobile data.
- Check the travel line is switched on. On iPhone, open the line in Settings > Cellular and make sure Turn On This Line is on.
- Turn on roaming for the travel eSIM if your provider’s instructions say so. Many travel eSIMs connect as a roaming SIM.
- Turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, and turn it off. This makes the phone search for networks again.
- Restart the phone.
- Pick a network by hand. In the travel line’s network settings, turn off automatic selection and choose one of the networks your provider lists for that country.
- Check the APN. Some providers ask you to enter an APN. Their install email or app shows it if it’s needed.
- Contact the provider’s support with your eSIM details. Don’t delete the eSIM first: most QR codes only work once.
It won’t install at all
- Install over Wi-Fi. Your phone needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot to download the eSIM.
- Check that your phone isn’t carrier-locked. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About: Carrier Lock should say No SIM Restrictions.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM. See does my phone support eSIM.
Calls, texts and charges
- Missing calls or texts on your home number? Make sure your home line is still switched on.
- Worried about charges? Check which line is set for mobile data, and keep roaming off on your home line unless you know what your carrier charges.
- Back home? Turn off the travel eSIM and switch your home line back on if your phone doesn’t do it for you.
Checked against the official guides: Apple Support: use an eSIM while traveling internationally, Google Pixel Help: use multiple SIMs. Checked 20 October 2026. Picking a network by hand and APN settings depend on your provider; follow its instructions.
